Bioterreta [ES]
Bioterreta is a multidisciplinary land stewardship project, specialized in rural areas and in the search for solutions to farmland abandonment and generational renewal. Founded in 2016 in the Valencian region of Vall d’Albaida, it has spent nearly a decade developing initiatives focused on agrarian stewardship, agroecology, and the circular economy, with the aim of creating a new agri-food organizational model adapted to small municipalities and rural areas at risk of abandonment. In its way of working, the project is conceived as a multi-tool based on six pillars: agroecology, circular economy, agrarian stewardship, food, applied technology, and networking. Each pillar has its own identity, but when connected to one another they generate a shared value system. Through the combination of all these tools, an agri-food production model adapted to smallholdings has been developed, one that preserves and restores agricultural systems and their biodiversity while simultaneously providing solutions to the abandonment of farmland. To this end, the management and operation of farms are always grounded in the principles of agroecology and follow circular economy models, efficiently seeking to make each plot profitable, no matter how small. Bioterreta has received several national awards and recognitions: the CONAMA Award 2022 at the National Environmental Congress; national finalist in the 2023 European ARIA Awards (Smart and Competitive Agriculture); winner in the 2023 Vivaces national competition for projects with social and environmental impact; selected in 2023 by SEO/BirdLife’s Libera Sponsorships Program; and in 2025 recognized as a model of rural environmental best practices by the PAC Network of Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition (MITECO).
